A New Kind of Yellow Journalism for the AI Age
Yellow journalism once described reporting that prized repetition, spectacle, and certainty over verification, allowing claims to harden into truth through sheer exposure. A monthlong experiment reported in The Conversation shows a similar pattern wearing modern clothes. AI chatbots summarized news confidently while inventing facts, misdating stories, and blending opinion into reporting. Repetition proved especially corrosive. When prominent figures repeated claims often enough, the systems began to treat assertion as background fact rather than contested statement. Traditional newsrooms separate what was said from what is true through editors, records, and correction. Chatbots inherit none of that discipline. They absorb volume, not judgment, and fluency masks uncertainty. Earlier posts here argued that AI works best as an assistant, not an authority. The experiment confirms an old lesson. Trust collapses when repetition replaces verification.
