Can You Take a Joke?
Ancient humor survives because it was rude, personal, and social, which makes modern unease historically incoherent. Greek comedy mocked mothers, bodies, intelligence, and status as civic practice, and the Philogelos joke collection preserves insults aimed at foolish families and pompous scholars. The current Wikipedia page for “yo mama” jokes tries to separate the modern phrase from older maternal insult traditions by leaning on examples framed as filial piety, including Rabbi Eliezer’s retort and Plutarch’s Cicero anecdote. That editorial caution about labels and sourcing does not erase the larger point. People in the ancient Mediterranean, and beyond it, used mother based insults to test status and nerve, and those records still refuse to sound polite and are edited today.
