The Politics of the High North

Greenland has become a diplomatic test of one of NATO’s oldest relationships. As an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, the island places Copenhagen in the unusual position of hosting critical United States military infrastructure far from the European mainland. For decades, the American presence at Pituffik Space Base rested on shared assumptions of trust and stability. Recent developments have sharpened attention on Greenland’s status. The appointment by President Donald Trump of a special envoy focused on Greenland and Arctic affairs revived sensitivities in Copenhagen and Nuuk, prompting Danish and Greenlandic leaders to reaffirm sovereignty and autonomy. Danish led military exercises in Greenland, at times conducted without United States participation, signals remaining firmly anchored within NATO. Meanwhile Norway has responded through alignment rather than rhetoric, consistently supporting Denmark and emphasizing Nordic coordination and restraint.
