Harmony at the Ismenion

Thebes joined the story of Cadmus and Harmonia to the belief that harmony rested on simple ratios first heard in music. Cadmus cleared the spring of the dragon and Harmonia entered the city as a figure whose name expressed right proportion. Greek thought held that music carried number because its intervals followed whole ratios and number-shape theory taught that figures revealed the nature of number. The Oracle of Apollo Ismenios reflected this order when a clean flame or a fortunate bird showed a balance that echoed the lyre. The Musaeum honored this discipline and the Kadmeia preserved the memory of the founders, and visitors believed the god revealed truth through the harmony that shaped myth and nature.
