Kuhn's Incommensurability
The CPU recovered in Terminator 2 invites the hope that tomorrow’s knowledge can be reached by careful study, yet real advancement seldom unfolds through simple examination. Cyberdyne’s team believes they can interpret the device with the theories they already possess, but a mechanism shaped by future ideas would not open itself so easily. A modern parallel shows why. A quantum processor placed in 1950 would puzzle even the most skilled engineers. They could trace its wiring yet would not know qubits or superposition because the concepts had not entered the scientific world. Clarke and Lem often wrote about this challenge when characters confronted devices born of knowledge they did not share. The Terminator’s CPU belongs to that tradition, pointing forward yet remaining unreadable until the larger world of ideas evolves.
