NASA & the Price of Forgetting

NASA's current dispute with its own research staff over the closure of the Goddard Space Flight Center library highlights an old lesson that modern institutions relearn at their peril. Scientific progress depends not only on new missions and private partnerships, but on stewardship of accumulated knowledge. Union leaders argue that irreplaceable materials remain undigitized, and that assurances from leadership underestimate what is being lost. Past posts here have returned to the same theme, efficiency gains often obscure quiet costs that appear only later. Space exploration was built on patient record keeping, shared archives, and institutional memory. When those foundations weaken, confidence erodes, morale suffers, and the mission itself becomes harder to sustain. NASA’s challenge is not innovation versus tradition, but whether it can honor both at once.
