Reading the Northern Lights

Long ago, the Northern Lights appeared as a magical spectacle, little understood by those who watched them. Norse and Sámi traditions treated the aurora with caution and respect, shaped by observation rather than explanation. Modern science has replaced myth with data, and Norway now stands at the center of how the phenomenon is studied. At UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the Norwegian Centre for Space Weather examines how solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and solar wind interact with Earth’s magnetic field. During this Solar Cycle 25, heightened solar activity has driven more frequent flares and geomagnetic storms, intensifying auroral activity well beyond its usual range. Researchers combine satellite observations, ground sensors, and AI trained on decades of solar data to improve flare detection and space weather forecasting. Nights above northern Norway underscored why this research matters - solar driven auroral activity disrupts satellites, navigation systems, and communications infrastructure.
